João Marcos wins Catoca Journalism Grand Prize

Journalist João Marcos dos Santos, Novo Jornal’s correspondent in Benguela province, was the winner of the Catoca Journalism Grand Prize 2024 Edition, valued at five million kwanzas.

The announcement was made Tuesday by the jury of the award, during the finalists’ gala, which took place at the Talatona Convention Center in Luanda, and was attended by several individuals, including the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, the governors of the provinces of Lunda Norte and Moxico, Deolinda Vilarinho and Ernesto Muangala, respectively.

Edições Novembro, the company that owns several titles, including Jornal de Angola, won most of the categories in the Catoca Journalism Prize, namely Image, Interview and Report, with work by Arimateia Baptista, Isaquiel Cori and Pedro Narciso.

The winners of the different categories were awarded 2.5 million kwanzas, as well as a certificate and trophy.

The winner in the National Language category was Boaventura João, from Televisão Pública de Angola (TPA). In the Reportage category, in addition to Pedro Narciso, from Jornal de Angola, Álvaro Victória, from Novo Jornal, was also honored, while Fernanda Manuel, from TPA, was named the best Sprecher.

The prize in the “Journalist from the East” category went to Mauro Guilherme, Rádio Ecclesia’s correspondent in the province of Lunda-Norte.

The promoter of the prize said it had received a total of 109 applications, which were assessed by an independent jury committee to determine the winners of the 2nd edition of the Catoca Journalism Prize.
