The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, heve recently inaugurated the Luele mine in Saurimo, set up on an area of 105 hectares, with a depth of 600 meters, and which is expected to produce 8.6 million carats by 2026.
João Lourenço called for mining companies to be more involved in supporting the communities near diamond mining areas, with sustainable projects in the area of social responsibility.
The President of the Republic said that companies that exploit mineral resources have an obligation to dedicate part of their revenues to improving the social conditions of people living in the surrounding areas.
“For this reason, Sociedade Mineira do Luele is going to finance a housing project with around 300 three-bedroom social houses for the resettlement of the population living around its concession area,” he said.
According to Luele’s management, the project is valued at 12 million US dollars, and will also include support infrastructures, such as primary and secondary schools, health posts and a police station, and others.
The main shareholders in the Luele Mine are Sociedade Mineira de Catoca (50.5%), ENDIAMA (25%), Falcon (19.5%), Reform (4.0%) and IGEO (1%).
